Belchertown Paddling Series


Enjoy adventuring and paddling and creating with the staff of Adventure In Adventure Out.  From paddling kayaks and homemade rafts on the Swift River and engaging in exciting activities throughout the day, to Archery, Firemaking and Primitive Shelter Building, to Caving in a cool limestone cave.   Stay cool, have fun and be adventurous!  Adventure In Adventure Out provides all canoes, kayaks, paddles, life jackets, first aid and workshop materials. These programs are sponsored through the Belchertown Parks and Recreation Department.

June 30th – Raft Race & GPS Scavenger Hunt at Town Beach, AIAO t-shirt raffle –

Challenge 1: Build rafts with empty water jugs, wooden boards, a truck inner tube, straps and your groups engineering ideas. Then, race the other teams in a relay race!

Challenge 2: Race around the park to find hidden riddles with your team’s GPS unit, clever clues, and your combined brain power. Each time you find 3, you come back to headquarters to solve team challenges, puzzles and more riddles.

Raffle: We will raffle off 2 AIAO t-shirts at the end.

July 7th – Kayaking & Capture the Flag –

Try our brand-new kayaks, as well as play our extra fun version of capture the flag. Hunt the flag, engage in warrior challenges, put a spell on the other team by hiding a magical object and more!

July 14th – Archery, Fire Challenge and Primitive Fort Building –

Use our recurve bows and targets, learn how to make fire with a bow and drill, and build forts out of materials found in the forest.

July 21st  –  Canoe Rafts? Yup! –

For each group of 6 – two canoes, ply wood, 2 x 4’s, screws, battery powered drills, and carpet, and a little effort and voila! we have built a floating catamaran to paddle, eat lunch on, and jump off and swim!

July 28th  –  Animal Tracks, Skulls, Antlers, Teeth, Claws! –

Learn how to identify different tracks and sign left behind to the many mammals that are present in the woods and wetlands around us. We will wander & explore as well as show you several of our animal skulls, antlers, track casts, claws, teeth that we have found and collected over many years of tracking. You will also be challenged with many awareness games, and nature mysteries along the way.

August 4th  –  Kayaking & Brain Games Challenge

Try our brand-new kayaks, as well as engage in a fun competition of puzzles, riddles, illusions, and brain twisters.

August 11th  –  New York Cave Adventure –

Join us for a unique and amazing underground adventure. Three quarters of a mile of subterranean limestone passage, carved out by the Onsquethaw Creek. Fossils, small pond, rooms with sweeping ceiling, as well as narrower passages that require crouching, and or crawling. This is a true spelunking experience with helmets, headlights, and well trained and experienced guides. This is one of AIAO’s most popular trips that will stick with you for a lifetime. Narrow crawling passages are always optional and not required/necessary.

  • Belchertown Recreation Department – 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. – Van transport provided
  • Ages 9 – 14 – An additional cave prep and info sheet will be provided upon sign up


COSTS:  All days:  $67.50,  except Raft Race/GPS  $65.-  and NY caving day:  $90.-

Pack your day pack! Here’s what to bring – Please read carefully:

  • nutritious lunch, snacks, drink & 11/2 quarts of water bottle
  • fleece jacket, sweater or thick sweatshirt (avoid cotton)
  • raincoat or other water resistant jacket
  • sunblock and sun hat
  • wear your bathing suit and bring dry shorts. – Not needed on cave day or days at Rec Dpt.
  • Foot wear:
    • Paddling days & Town Beach day: sandals with a heel strap or sneakers – no flip flops
    • Rec Department days: sneakers or hiking shoes – no flip flops, sandals or crocs
    • Caving – An additional cave prep sheet will be provided for the NY cave trip


Adventure In Adventure Out Staff: AIAO is proud to have highly skilled, trained and experienced staff who are professionals in the field of outdoor adventure education. Our staff has formal education and training in outdoor skills ranging from the certificate level up to Master’s Degree programs. Many of them have specialized skills and training in their favorite outdoor adventure activities and we match their expertise with the appropriate programs. All staff are required to maintain current certifications in CPR and Wilderness First Aid and have training in emergency care and rescue. Our leaders are passionate about mentoring and empowering their participants to make new discoveries, to learn outdoor skills and to gain a deeper appreciation and respect for themselves, each other and the natural environment.
